How do I watch or play in games in SL?
All SL games are played in the Infantry zone [League] Skirmish League. To watch or play in scrims, you must obtain an entry permit to the league zone. You may watch both practice scrimmages and official games, but to play in official games, you must either join a squad or play as an NT player (more information on this can be found in the rules page).

How do I get access to the SL Zone in Infantry?
First, sign up on the site. Be sure that the alias that you register on the site matches the alias you want to play SL on exactly. Next, contact a League Administrator or League Moderator and ask for access permit. The aliases of the Admin and Mods can be found on the staff page. You may contact them either in game or through this site via the SLmail system. The staff will give you access as soon as they get a chance. You may only have access on one alias at a time.

How do I join a squad?
It is best to observe a few offical SL games and play in a few mix practice scrimmages first. Once you have a basic understanding of SL game play and SL squads, you should try to join a squad by either privately contacting the captain or an assistant captain of a squad that you are interested in joining, or by monitoring the league forums for announcements of squads recruiting and proceed from there. Squads often recruit publicly in-between SL seasons. Some squads will hold tryout sessions open to the public. This is a good oppertunity to join a squad, so monitoring the forums carefully after the end of a season will pay off.

What commands are xSL[Cap] and xSL[SMP] aliases allowed to use, and what do those commands do?
*timer: Starts a countdown timer for the arena. Can be expressed as minutes or seconds. Syntax: *timer 1:00, *timer :20
*arena: Sends an arena-wide message. Prepending your message with the symbols from the numerical row of your keyboard will change the message color. Syntax: *arena Game on!
*restart: Restarts the game. Always use *endgame before *restart, or else the in-game time display will not work correctly. Syntax: *restart.
*watchmod: This command toggles on/off the ability to view other mod commands in the arena that the modded player is present in. This ability is on by default. Syntax: *watchmod
*teamname: This command can be used to rename the default Titan Marines and Collective Marines teams. To use it, simply type the command followed by the new names; seperate the names with commas. The first name provided will always change the name of the team called Titan Marines by default, and the second name provided will change the Collective team. Using this command to change any more than the first two names is a violation of SMP rules. This is because it has been observed in the past that using too many teams can sometimes crash the league zone. Syntax: *teamname new name for Titan Marines, new name for Collective Marines
*team: This command, when sent as a private message, switches the messaged player to the team specified. The only teams that players may be switched to are the default teams of spec, Titan Marines, and Collective Marines, or the new custom names for the Titan and Collective sides as renamed through the use of the *teamname command. If the player has not yet been unspecced, he will still switch to the team specified, but will remain in spec mode, thus allowing him to communicate with the team without unspeccing. To switch such a player back to spec mode, simply provide spec as the name of the team switching to. Syntax: :playername:*team name of target team
*unspec: This command, when sent as a private message, will unspec the messaged player to the team specified. The only teams that players may be switched to are the default teams of spec, Titan Marines, and Collective Marines, or the new custom names for the Titan and Collective sides as renamed through the use of the *teamname command. If the player this command is sent to is already unspecced, but on a team other than the one specified, this command will keep the player unspecced, but switch him to the team specified. Syntax: :playername:*unspec name of target team
*spec: This command, when sent as a private message, sets the messaged player to spectator mode on spec team. Syntax: :playername:*spec
*spec all: This command places all unspecced players into spectator mode on the spec team. Syntax: *spec all
*lock: This command prevents all players in the arena from manually unspeccing. Syntax: *lock
*unlock: This command enables manual unspeccing to all players in the arena. Note that, in SL, several minutes after a game has started, no players may unspec manually, regardless of *lock/*unlock status. Syntax: *unlock
*specquiet: This command toggles on/off specquiet status, which, when on, disables spectator ability to send public chat or private messages. It is useful for cutting down on distracting chatter or simulating real SL match conditions. By default, specquiet is off. Syntax: *specquiet
*warp: This command only works if the user is unspecced. When sent as a public message, it warps the user to a random spot on the board. When sent as a private message, it warps the user to the approximate coordinates of the messaged player. Note that if a player in spec mode is messaged with this command, the user is warped to the center viewing point of the messaged player. Syntax: *warp or :playername:*warp
*summon: This command, when sent as a private message, summons the messaged player to the user's approximate coordinates.
*goto: This command sends the user close to the exact coordinates he specifies. Syntax: *goto x,y where x is the first number in the exact coordinate grid and y is the second number in the exact coordinate grid.
*endgame: This command, used only if enough players have been unspecced to start a game or if a game is already in progress, ends the current game in progress and activates a thirty second countdown to the start of the next game; once the countdown reaches zero, the new game starts automatically. Use this command to start a game after unspeccing players for both teams or to restart a game. Syntax: *endgame

Can I have more than one alias in SL?
No. Top
|
How do I change my picture above my name in my profile?
That picture is representative of the class you play in Skirmish League. Those who have
not participated in Skirmish League will have a light blue coloured character; representative
of no class. The only exception to this rule is that any Staff member automatically has a
gold coloured character. So if you want to change that picture you should either play some official
games of Skirmish League as what ever class you would like that picture represent, or become a
staff member. Top

What is a chit/demerit?
Chits are awarded to those who help the integrity of the league. Demerits are assigned to those who hurt the integrity
of the league. Chits are assigned only by the League Administrator, and demerits are assigned only by the League Administrator
and SL Police. Chits will help you gain rank while demerits will lower your rank. Top

What is efficiency?
Efficiency is based on how well you do in a winning or losing situation. Taking a long time to lose and taking a short
time to win will increase your efficiency. Losing quickly, or winning slowly will decrease your efficiency. However,
you will always gain more efficiency from a win, than you will from a loss. Efficiency ratings from 0-50 are awarded
for losing teams, while efficiency ratings of 50-100 are awarded for winning teams. Your efficiency will calculate into
your end rating, where a higher efficiency will offer a higher rating. Top
|
What is competition?
Competition is an average of all of the ratings of the squads that have been faced at the time that you faced them. Conceptually,
it is a difficulty level. A high competition suggests very tough opposing squads. A low competition suggests
very easy opposing squads. It is calculated into the rating formula to help compensate for
difficulty discrepencies within the schedule. It also prevents players from only playing in easy game in order to attain a
high rating. Top

How do I get into the Officer Forum?
The Officer Forum is a forum for those who are actual veterans of Skirmish League. Specifically it is for those who have
achieved a rank of a Commisioned Officer on this site. A Commissioned Officer is any rank of 2nd Lieutentant and higher. If you

|
How do I put HTML in my profile?
Only those who have achieved a rank of Commisioned Officer or higher on this site may use HTML in their profile. This is to ensure
that the player will not abuse such a right and act responsibly. If you have a rank that is lower than this you will not be able to use HTML in your profile. Also, if your rank drops below that of Commisioned Officer, and you attempt to edit your profile, all HTML that you included will become invalidated. Top

How do I become a SL Staff member?
The easiest way to apply to be a staff member is to log in to your profile and then look at the links provided under "Applications"; any positions listed
have applications for them, though they may not be accepting applications at that time. If you have questions about your application, contact the Webmaster for
Site Moderator applications or and the Head Analyst for Match Analyst applications. The individuals holding those positions
can be found by clicking on the staff link on the left menu.
If you wish to tryout for a Referee position, you should SLmail one of the Head Referees to find out when tryouts next occur. Top

How do I make an 'official' squad?
An official squad is simply a squad that has 12 or more members. To raise the number of members on your squad
registered site users must request to join your squad. When you accept their requests they are added to your
squad, and the number of members on your squad increase. In order to apply for the Entrance Tournament or to
enter the Stand-by List you must be an official squad. As well, in order to use HTML in your squad comment the
squad must be official. Top

What is the SL Police Force?
The Skirmish League Police Force is essentially a special police force designed to operate within Skirmish League. It operates without
any restrictions by league authority (save the League Administrator), meaning that its members can not be tried for any of their police
practices. This unconditional authority adds an elitist element to the SL Police; its members know that whatever
actions they take, no consequences will arise. The only way one becomes a member of the SL Police is to be hand picked
by the League Administrator. The SL Police function as Forum Moderators. They have the power to assign demerits and
to erase inappropriate posts. Top
|
How can I increase the number of posts I can make on the public forum?
The number of new posts you can create on the public forum and the number of replies you can create on the forum within a 1
hour time slot depends upon your rank. A private will be limited to 1 new message and 2 replies every hour.
A 2nd Lt, on the other hand, is only limited to 2 new messages and 6 replies each hour. The obvious exception is
for those in detention who cannot post at all. The increases in the maximum posting limit occur gradually as one increases through
the ranks. Top

My FPS (frames per second) is horrible... how can I fix it?
Assuming that you don't want to invest any more money in your computer, a since-retired member of the community has provided the following information on boosting your FPS:
In-Game:
Options » Graphic options » Fake alpha blending, turn to Yes.
Out of Game:
View » options » Turn detail level on Low.
View » Advanced Options » Only 4 boxes should be checked:
-Show Frame rate
-Render when window is in Background
-Skip Splash Entry
-Run game process as high priority (Note: RogerWilco/TeamSpeak users and MP3 listeners should not check this)
Uncheck all that other crap.
Operating System Settings
Hit CTRL + ALT + DELETE
Shutdown all other programs (at your own risk) besides Systray, Explorer and Infantry. Don't shut down any programs that you need to have open so your comp will run.
Make sure all your accelerators are on high or full.
If you don't restart your computer often, you might want to do this to clear out your RAM. This should lead to better gameplay.
